BREAKING: Atiku Abubakar resigns from PDP after decades of membership

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of a long-standing affiliation with the party he helped establish.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and the party’s deviation from its founding principles as reasons for his decision.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read. “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and contested the presidency under the PDP in 2019 and 2023, lamented the direction the party has taken in recent times.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he stated, while expressing gratitude for the opportunities the PDP provided him throughout his political career.

The resignation letter was officially acknowledged by Hammedoma Abubakar, a PDP ward official, on the same day.

Atiku’s exit from the PDP is seen as a major development in the run-up to the 2027 general elections, fueling speculation about his next political move.
