You’re a liar – Presidency knocks Peter Obi over one-term tenure remark
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as a “liar” following Obi’s recent pledge to serve only one term if elected president.
Onanuga, in a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, took aim at Obi’s one-term vow, stating that the former Anambra governor lacks the moral standing to make such promises. He dismissed comparisons made between Obi and revered global leaders like Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy.
“You’re neither a Mandela nor a Lincoln or a Kennedy,” Onanuga wrote. “You sound as if you have never held an elected office before. You sought re-election as Anambra Governor in 2010 and narrowly won, courtesy of a divided opposition. Why didn’t you walk away after only one term?”
Questioning Obi’s track record, Onanuga further said, “If you couldn’t transform a small Anambra after eight years, is there a guarantee that you’ll do anything significant under four years as president of a complex and complicated Nigeria?”
He also accused the Labour Party leader of not keeping to past political promises. “You said you won’t leave APGA, but you left. The reason for your exit is immaterial because if we’re to make allowance for excuses, you’ll definitely have an excuse to break your one-term vow,” he added.
Onanuga’s comments follow Peter Obi’s public reaffirmation of his commitment to serve only a single four-year term if elected president, a statement that has stirred both support and skepticism in political circles.
