Yoruba culture remains resilient against foreign influence — Alaafin of Oyo

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade has reaffirmed the enduring strength of Yoruba culture, stating that the ancient civilization has remained steadfast and immune to foreign cultural domination despite centuries of external contact and influence.

In a statement released Wednesday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch made the declaration during the grand finale of the Oro Festival held at the royal palace in Oyo.

Oba Owoade emphasized that Yoruba religion and tradition are deeply rooted in oral history and have been preserved through generations. He described Yoruba culture as a unique blend of spiritual beliefs and political organization, guided by a well-structured leadership system that enforces ethical and moral discipline.

“Yoruba traditional belief holds that all power in the universe emanates from a supreme being, Olodumare,” the Alaafin said. “Olodumare is the source of all things — beyond gender — and the giver of all life, both spiritual and physical.”

The monarch expressed concern over the growing threats posed by unchecked modernization and moral permissiveness, warning that they could erode the core of Yoruba values. He urged communities to remain vigilant in protecting their indigenous identity and traditions.

“We must not allow the foundation of our life to be stolen or the basis of our existence as a people to be destroyed,” he said. “The Yoruba recognise the importance of a society guided by law, order, and moral discipline — values that begin with early childhood training.”

Oba Owoade commended the commitment of Yoruba elders and youth in preserving the Oro Festival and other traditions, pledging to continue his role as a principal custodian of Yoruba heritage.

“As Alaafin, I will leave no stone unturned in defending and promoting Yoruba cultural values at all times,” he declared.

The cultural celebration ended with prayers for peace, unity, and development in Oyo, Oyo State, and Nigeria, as well as for divine guidance and longevity for the Alaafin as he continues his reign.
