Wike reveals when Rivers State emergency rule will end

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed optimism that the state of emergency in Rivers State will come to an end on September 18, REPUBLICAN NIGERIA reports.

Wike, who spoke on Saturday after casting his vote in the ongoing local government elections in the state, said he expects the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume full legislative duties once the emergency lapses.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier declared emergency rule in Rivers to avert a deepening political crisis, suspending Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months.

“As far as we are concerned, this election is peaceful. People are trooping out, and at the end of the day, it has been conducted successfully and peacefully,” Wike told reporters.

“I do know that by September 18, the state of emergency will expire and the state assembly will come back to their job, and we will have a government at the grassroots level,” he added.

According to him, the political environment is now stable enough for governance to resume.

“The coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted, since the state government has its representatives and the local government has its representatives. So we are good to go,” Wike said.
