Why we withheld certificate of viral corper Rita Uguamaye who criticised Tinubu's govt – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it withheld the Certificate of National Service (CNS) of a corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, because of her alleged criticism of the government.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC described the reports as “misleading” and “inaccurate.”

NYSC instead explained that, Rita, with code number LA/24B/8325, is among 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for “valid disciplinary reasons.”

The NYSC explained that her service year was extended by two months due to her failure to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance, a requirement under the NYSC Bye-Laws.

“This extension is not a punitive action for personal opinions or political reasons but a standard disciplinary measure applied equally to all corps members who default in mandatory activities,” the statement read.

The NYSC stressed that the decision was in line with its established procedures, noting that similar actions have been taken in numerous cases over the years without discrimination. It further urged the public to avoid politicizing the issue or misrepresenting the scheme’s disciplinary processes.

“The NYSC Scheme remains committed to carrying out its mandate in accordance with the constitution, with fairness and without bias. Extending service for non-compliance is a long-established practice, and every corps member is expected to abide by the rules,” the statement added.

The management reiterated its call for understanding from the public, emphasizing its motto: “Nigeria is ours; Nigeria we serve.”
