WAFCON 2024: Nigeria’s Ajibade named Best Player, Nnadozie Top Goalkeeper

Nigeria’s triumphant run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was crowned with more than a record-extending 10th title — two of the team’s standout stars, Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie, also claimed top individual awards.

The Super Falcons staged a stunning 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco on Saturday night in a thrilling final in Rabat. The win preserved Nigeria’s perfect record in WAFCON finals, making it 10 titles in 10 appearances — a testament to the team’s enduring dominance on the continent.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who led with inspiration and flair, was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. The versatile winger was a consistent force throughout the competition, earning Woman of the Match in three of Nigeria’s six games. Her leadership and relentless drive were instrumental in the Falcons’ resilience, especially after trailing 2-0 at halftime in the final.

In goal, Chiamaka Nnadozie further cemented her reputation as one of Africa’s finest shot-stoppers. The 23-year-old was awarded Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, conceding just two goals in open play — both in the final. Her calm presence, critical saves, and command in the knockout stages were vital to Nigeria’s success, particularly in the tense semi-final clash against defending champions South Africa.

Despite falling short in the final, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the Golden Boot with five goals, including the opener in the final. Her performances lit up the tournament and inspired the Atlas Lionesses’ impressive run to the final.

Meanwhile, South Africa, who were narrowly eliminated by Nigeria in the semi-finals, received the Fair Play Award for exemplary sportsmanship and discipline throughout the tournament.

This 2024 edition marked the 13th WAFCON tournament, reinforcing Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football. With a flawless record in finals and unmatched team depth, the Super Falcons remain the gold standard on the continent.
