WAEC speaks on ‘viral list of schools with withheld WASSCE results’

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a circulating list naming 120 schools allegedly affected by withheld results in the recently released 2025 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement on Monday, the examination body described the list as fake and unauthorised, stressing that it did not originate from WAEC.
The fake list, which has gone viral on WhatsApp, was attributed to the Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities, Dr Florence Omobonike Ajayi. It claimed that the principals of the affected schools, mostly located in Lagos, were to appear before an investigative panel on or before August 16 with relevant documents and candidates’ scripts.
However, WAEC said that the council does not operate using school names but by centre numbers. It added that no school has access to candidates’ scripts, and as such, the demand in the viral circular is baseless.
“The message never emanated from us. Moreover, WAEC will never ask any school to bring the scripts of their candidates to the office. Where would they get them from? We don’t know schools by their names. We only know centres and their Centre Numbers,” WAEC clarified.
This development follows the official release of the 2025 WASSCE results, in which only 38.32% of candidates obtained five credits including English Language and Mathematics.
WAEC urged the public to disregard the fake list and rely only on official information released by the council.
