Strike: LASU suspends exams, orders students to vacate hostels

Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all academic and socio-academic activities, including the upcoming second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 session, following the ongoing industrial action by staff unions, republican.com.ng reports.

The university’s Senate reached the decision during a virtual emergency meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The resolution was announced in an official statement by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations.

The suspension follows a strike action declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which comprises the LASU branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

According to the statement, the Senate acknowledged that the demands made by the unions were directed primarily at the Lagos State Government, not the university management.

“The core demands of the Joint Action Committee are directed at the Lagos State Government,” the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate was quoted as saying.

The Senate further noted that the university management had made sustained efforts to mediate between the staff unions and the state government. A high-level meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, with representatives from the unions, university management, and relevant state ministries in attendance.

The meeting reportedly concluded with an agreement to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, for further dialogue.

Pending the outcome of these consultations, LASU Senate resolved to place all activities on hold. “The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, initially scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, 2025, are hereby suspended, and all other activities in the university are on hold until further notice,” the statement read.

In addition, all students have been instructed to vacate their hostels on or before 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4. This directive affects all campuses—Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry.

“Members of the LASU community, particularly students, are enjoined to remain calm and law-abiding during this period,” the university urged, signing off with the institution’s slogan:
“We are LASU, We are Great!”
