Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Thursday afternoon as fire razed no fewer than six shops at the Ile-Ewe, Sawmill area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started suddenly, quickly engulfing the affected shops and causing panic in the area. The fire outbreak reportedly destroyed valuable goods and equipment in at least six of the ten shops in the complex.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, revealed in a statement that fire service officials responded promptly to the distress call.
“The agency’s personnel, led by CFS Dairo, arrived at the scene by 14:14 hours. Upon arrival, we found six of the ten locked-up shops already engulfed in flames,” the statement read.
“Our firefighters acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to the remaining shops and surrounding properties. Though goods worth millions were destroyed, we were able to save other properties from being consumed by the inferno.”
Akinwande added that no lives were lost in the incident, and a post-fire investigation is underway to determine the cause of the outbreak.
