Phyna’s sister Ruth Otabor passes away weeks after accident with Dangote truck

Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has sadly passed away.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, where Ruth recently graduated confirmed her death via a WhatsApp status update.

Recall that on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, tragedy struck when Ruth was hit by a Dangote Cement truck near the institution, just six days after completing her studies.

The accident crushed one of her legs, leading to an emergency amputation, while doctors also expressed fear that her other leg was in danger.

Eyewitnesses prevented the truck driver from escaping after the incident. Following the accident, Phyna demanded justice, alleging negligence and attempts at a cover-up by relevant authorities.

Dangote Cement Plc later released a statement acknowledging the incident, noting that its officials and insurers had visited the scene, engaged law enforcement, and provided initial support to Ruth and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. The company also promised medical assistance and compensation under its welfare policy.

However, weeks later, Phyna raised alarm in a viral video, claiming that Dangote’s representatives had gone silent on her sister’s case, fueling suspicions of foul play.

The reality TV star herself was hospitalized shortly afterward, reportedly due to the emotional toll of the ordeal.

Sadly, despite medical efforts, Ruth passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 p.m.

Phyna confirmed the heartbreaking news in a press statement on her Instagram page.

She appealed to the public to allow her family privacy to grieve, assuring that funeral arrangements would be communicated in due time.
