Peter Obi

Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, paid a solemn visit on Saturday to the family of the late Peter Rufai, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, at their Amuwo Odofin residence.

Obi missed Rufai’s burial, which took place on Friday, after learning of the date too late.

Determined to pay his respects, he flew into Lagos on Saturday and went directly to the Rufai home, where he was warmly received by Rufai’s siblings—Bruce, Bosede, and Dele.

Former Super Eagles star Sylvanus Okpala accompanied him.

“I am deeply sorry for the passing of our great goalkeeper,” Obi said. “Rufai was a national figure who played with dignity. It pains me that our nation often neglects those who have given their best in service.”

Obi spent about an hour with the family, praying for Rufai’s soul, offering comfort, and reflecting quietly. Bruce Rufai expressed gratitude, saying Obi’s visit lifted their spirits amid what they described as neglect by the authorities.
