Panic as rampaging elephant k!lls farmer in Ogun community

Panic has gripped residents of Itasin-Imobi in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State following the tragic death of a local farmer, Musa Kalamu, who was attacked and k!lled by a stray elephant believed to have wandered from a government forest reserve.

The incident occurred on Monday while Kalamu was working on his farm. Eyewitnesses said the elephant suddenly emerged from the bush and launched a deadly attack, leaving the farmer with fatal injuries. He reportedly d!ed while being rushed to the hospital.

The elephant, which locals say has been terrorising the community for over four years, has destroyed farmlands, fishing equipment, and now, taken a life.

“This is not the first time. We’ve been living in fear. The elephant keeps destroying our crops and fishing tools. Now, it has killed someone,” a resident lamented.

The tragic event sparked outrage, with community members calling on the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies to step in urgently and prevent further attacks.

Confirming the incident, Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, said officials were already heading to the affected community. Similarly, the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, said officers from the Forestry Department had been mobilised to manage the situation and ensure public safety.

A video of the victim’s body circulated on social media Tuesday, showing the extent of the injuries. In the clip, residents could be heard pleading for immediate government intervention to address the recurring threat posed by the wild elephant.

“This is too much. We are no longer safe,” a voice in the video cried. “The government must act before more lives are lost.”

Calm has reportedly been restored to the community as authorities continue efforts to contain the situation.
