OYRTMA bans officers from wearing mufti during enforcement operations
The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has directed all its officers to wear officially approved uniforms during enforcement duties across the state.
The directive follows rising complaints from members of the public that some officers were conducting arrests and enforcement activities in mufti or unapproved clothing, creating confusion and distrust among road users.
Speaking during a briefing with zonal commanders in Ibadan, OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), emphasized that uniforms are central to professionalism, accountability, and public confidence in the agency’s operations.
“Conducting enforcement in mufti creates confusion, instills fear, and undermines the legitimacy of our work. It also exposes officers to allegations of impersonation, extortion, and misconduct, which ultimately tarnish the image of OYRTMA,” Adekoya said.
He declared that henceforth, no officer would be permitted to participate in traffic enforcement without being fully kitted in the official OYRTMA uniform. Zonal and Unit Commanders have been instructed to ensure strict compliance across all operational units.
The chairman warned that violators of the new directive would face disciplinary actions in accordance with the agency’s service regulations.
“The uniform represents authority, discipline, and service to the people. Our officers must perform their duties with civility, respect for citizens’ rights, and in line with operational guidelines. Our mandate is to ensure safety and order on Oyo roads, not to intimidate or harass motorists,” he added.
OYRTMA reassured the public that the measure is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, professionalism, and discipline in the agency, while strengthening public trust.
