Oyo State unveils first-ever female football team, Pacesetter Queens FC

In a landmark move aimed at promoting gender equality and boosting sports development, the Oyo State Government has officially launched its premier female football club, Pacesetter Queens FC.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Tuesday during a press conference held by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, who also showcased the team’s official logo and introduced key members of its leadership.
Speaking at the event, which drew notable football stakeholders, dignitaries, and media representatives, Adegoke expressed appreciation to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support in bringing the initiative to life. She described the formation of the team as a testament to the governor’s commitment to empowering female athletes and fostering equal opportunities in sports.
“This is a milestone made possible by His Excellency’s dedication and financial support,” Adegoke said. “Pacesetter Queens FC is not just a team but a movement that represents strength, unity, and ambition.”
She added that Governor Makinde will personally conduct the official flag-off of the club and urged players to wear the jersey with pride and represent the state with passion and purpose.
Highlighting the state’s vision to make a lasting impact in Nigeria’s women’s football scene, the commissioner noted that Oyo is ready to set new standards through robust leadership and strategic planning.
The club’s leadership team is made up of experienced professionals, including:
Akinwunmi Obajimi – Head Coach
Damilola Olaitan Badmus – First Assistant Coach (CAF C licence holder)
Zaccheaus Aderoju – Second Assistant Coach
Lateef Lukman – Physical Trainer
Foluso Ajayi – FIFA-certified Goalkeeper Trainer
Grace Towobola – Welfare Officer (CAF and UEFA B licence holder)
Adegoke affirmed that their combined expertise will enhance player development and elevate the club’s performance on the national stage.
She also announced a one-month trial period for aspiring players, with post-trial support including the provision of a team bus. The trials will be held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, and the Olubadan Stadium, both of which have been fully prepared for training activities.
The event also featured former Super Eagles star Mutiu Adepoju and the Chairman of the Oyo State Football Association, Oba James Odeniran, signaling broad-based support for the initiative.
With bold ambitions, a strong leadership foundation, and the backing of the state government, Pacesetter Queens FC is poised to become a formidable force in women’s football across Nigeria and beyond.
