Oyo police arrest man with ₦1 million counterfeit notes
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a driver carrying ₦1 million in counterfeit currency during a routine stop-and-search on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The suspect, identified as Akande, was stopped on Friday, August 29, at around 8:45 p.m. near the Guru Maharaji area while driving a green Toyota Sienna (FKJ 443 YG) toward Osogbo.
Police recovered ₦1 million in fake ₦1,000 notes hidden in a taped plastic parcel. Investigations revealed that the bills bore only three serial numbers: 235923 (₦500,000), 235922 (₦300,000), and 235921 (₦200,000).
Akande admitted he was acting as a courier, receiving the package from an unknown person in Ojota, Lagos, and was instructed to deliver it to Osogbo. He claimed he believed the parcel contained body cream, not counterfeit money.
CSP Adewale Osifeso, Police Public Relations Officer, said the arrest reflects the command’s commitment to fighting financial crimes and protecting the economy.
