Oyo Govt distributes 18,000 tablets to public school teachers to boost digital learning

In a major push towards modernizing education, the Oyo State Government has handed out 18,000 tablets to teachers in public primary and secondary schools across the state.
This initiative, funded by the World Bank and coordinated by the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA), is part of a broader strategy to enhance teaching methods and improve student learning outcomes.
The official distribution ceremony was held at Emmanuel College, Samonda, Ibadan, where Deputy Governor Barrister Adebayo Lawal represented Governor Seyi Makinde. At the event, the government announced that teachers would undergo a mandatory four-week training program at 16 training centers statewide to ensure they can effectively use the new devices.
Deputy Governor Lawal described the program as a “bold step towards digitalizing education,” highlighting that each tablet is preloaded with a variety of teaching aids, academic content, and e-learning applications. These resources are expected to make lesson delivery more interactive and aligned with international standards.
He emphasized that the current administration’s commitment to education is reflected in the 2025 budget, which exceeds the UNESCO recommendation for education funding. The goal is to equip educators with modern tools that enhance teaching quality and provide students with a richer learning experience.
The tablets are designed not only to assist in lesson preparation but also to facilitate tracking of teaching plans, student assessment, and real-time data collection for policy development. Teachers present at the ceremony expressed enthusiasm, saying the devices would reduce the burden of manual lesson planning and help foster digital literacy among students.
Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of Oyo SUBEB, praised the initiative as a vital step toward raising educational standards in the state. Special Adviser on Education Intervention, Hon. Suraj Tiamiyu, explained that the tablets feature security measures to monitor usage, with regular reports to ensure accountability.
Among those who received the tablets, educators Adelakun Folashade and Gbenga Faniran thanked the government for the support, noting that the devices would streamline teaching and save time. The event also saw the presence of Mr. Alabi Baba Asaaju, South West Zonal Director of UBEC, alongside state commissioners and other senior officials.
