Oyo Govt cautions new JPs against criminal case interference

The Oyo State Government has warned newly screened Justices of the Peace (JPs) to steer clear of criminal cases, stressing that their mandate is limited to mediating minor disputes and promoting peace at the grassroots.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ayodeji Abiodun Aikomo, Esq., issued the warning during the screening of more than 300 applicants for the honorary JP title. The exercise took place at the Ministry of Justice Conference Room, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

Aikomo explained that the two-day screening was designed to ensure that only credible and competent individuals are appointed. According to him, the JP role is vital to community justice as it focuses on conflict mediation, peace promotion, and service as moral guides.

He urged the applicants to uphold integrity, impartiality, and confidentiality in carrying out their duties. “Uphold fairness, do not exploit the position for personal gain, and do not interfere in criminal cases beyond your jurisdiction,” the Commissioner cautioned.

The Attorney General emphasized that the JP title should not be viewed as a symbol of prestige, but rather as a call to serve with honour and responsibility. He said those conferred with the role must be ready to dedicate themselves to peacebuilding and justice.

In her remarks, the Director of the Citizens Mediation Centre, Mrs. Adeola Ige Adeleke, encouraged applicants to study the JP manuals thoroughly to gain deeper insight into their responsibilities. She described the role as essential to grassroots justice delivery.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. Fatimo Yusuf, reiterated that the JP position is about fostering peace, building harmony, and supporting justice based on truth, rather than wielding influence for personal advantage.

The screening panel, made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and related agencies, assessed applicants based on integrity, community service, and knowledge of JP responsibilities.

The government noted that successful candidates will be officially conferred with the honorary JP title after due diligence has been completed.
