Oyo Governor names Samonda Housing Estate after late APC lawmaker Akinremi Jagaban

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially named a new Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Samonda, Ibadan, in honour of the late All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, Prince Olaide Akinremi, popularly known as “Jagaban.”

Akinremi, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency from 2019 until his passing on July 10, 2024, was recognised for his dedicated service to his constituency and contributions to the development of Oyo State.

The unveiling ceremony took place along Dominion University Road and was represented on the governor’s behalf by his deputy, Bayo Lawal.

Speaking at the event, Lawal assured that the housing project would be completed to high standards, with all necessary infrastructure provided. He also confirmed the ongoing reconstruction of the UI–Samonda–Sango/Poly link road.

“This is not about politics but about immortalising a man who served his people diligently,” Lawal stated, noting that the decision to honour Akinremi was made shortly after his death.

Local government officials and traditional leaders lauded the gesture. Ibadan North Local Government Chairman, Oluseun Olufade, and High Chief Akinade Fijabi praised Governor Makinde’s inclusive leadership. Abideen Akinremi, speaking on behalf of the late lawmaker’s family, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.

However, the announcement comes amid controversy.

The Oyo State APC has accused Governor Makinde of using the late lawmaker’s name to justify the alleged sale of the state-owned Trans Amusement Park in Ibadan for private housing development.

The party condemned the conversion of the recreational facility into residential estates, describing it as a politically motivated move ahead of upcoming elections and a threat to public amenities.
