Oyo government moves to implement digital house numbering system
The Oyo State Government has commenced plans to introduce a digital system for street naming and house numbering, in a bid to enhance urban planning and improve emergency response across the state.
Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, revealed the initiative on Wednesday during a strategic meeting with representatives of Smart City Development Konsult Limited at the ministry’s conference room.
According to Akin-Funmilayo, the digital addressing project is part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s “Omituntun 2.0” Roadmap for Sustainable Development, which prioritizes modernizing infrastructure and improving service delivery to residents.
“This project goes beyond merely assigning numbers to houses. It will enable easier identification of buildings, reduce delays during emergencies, and support effective urban management,” he explained.
The commissioner highlighted the importance of the initiative, especially in emergency situations where unclear addresses often hinder rescue operations. “In cases of fire outbreaks or medical emergencies, responders lose valuable time trying to locate houses without proper numbering. This delay can cost lives,” he noted.
He assured that the state government is committed to kick-starting the project before the current administration’s tenure ends, stressing that discussions have already been held with Governor Makinde, who has expressed strong support for the proposal.
Also present at the meeting was the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Professor Musibau Babatunde, who backed the project and reiterated its alignment with the administration’s development agenda.
“The people of Oyo State deserve the benefits of a smart, organized city, and this is a vital step in that direction,” Akin-Funmilayo concluded.
