Oyo anti-corruption agency secures conviction of senior civil servant over employment scam
The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) has secured the conviction of Mr. Wahab Nasiru Olabanji, a senior officer at the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, for defrauding job seekers under the pretext of offering them employment.
Until his prosecution, Olabanji held the position of Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) on Grade Level 14. He was found guilty of exploiting applicants during recent recruitment exercises at the Hospital Management Board and the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of OYACA, Hon. Justice Eni Esan (rtd), revealed that Olabanji was arraigned on a 30-count charge, including official corruption, obtaining money under false pretences, and fraudulent conversion.
Following a 17-month trial, the court found Olabanji guilty on all counts and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment on each count, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine per charge.
“The defendant was convicted after the court thoroughly reviewed the evidence. This judgement underscores our agency’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption in the state,” Justice Esan stated.
In addition to the prison term and fines, the court ordered Olabanji to refund all money he fraudulently obtained from his victims within three months.
Justice Esan emphasized that the ruling serves as both restitution for the victims and a deterrent to others in the public service.
“This is a crucial step toward justice for those who were deceived and financially exploited. OYACA remains resolute in its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and will continue to hold accountable those who abuse their public office,” she added.
