Outrage as Ondo student allegedly murd£red by boyfriend
Less than three weeks after the murder of two undergraduates from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), the institution has been rocked by yet another tragedy. A female student, identified as Joy Adeyemi from the Department of Human Kinetics, was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, igniting widespread outrage among students and residents.
Adeyemi had been declared missing earlier in the week. Her decomposing body was later discovered locked in her boyfriend’s room after neighbours detected a foul odour and raised an alarm. According to sources, the suspect—an indigene of the university town—stabbed her to death on Tuesday, then fled the community, taking with him proceeds from her Point-of-Sale (POS) business.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the tragic incident: “She had been missing since Tuesday. It was when neighbours perceived a bad smell from the room that the discovery was made. We’re still in the dark about his motive.”
The killing has sparked protests across the university town, with students taking to the streets carrying placards and chanting slogans like “Stop killing us, AAUA students.” Protesters demanded urgent intervention from the state government and security agencies, decrying a spate of killings allegedly linked to locals.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, condemned the killing in a strongly worded statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Adekanye Adeboye and Oladele Emmanuel. The statement read in part: “The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis is appalled and deeply saddened by the recent wave of killings targeting students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.
The incessant killings are a clear indication of a security lapse that must be addressed urgently.”
NANS issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and relevant security agencies to arrest the culprits and enforce better security measures. The association warned that failure to act would trigger a nationwide student protest in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that three suspects had been arrested, and efforts were underway to apprehend others still at large. “Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
In a related appeal, the Head of Media and Protocols of AAUA, Mr Victor Akinpelumi, urged students to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “We are appealing to the students to be patient and allow the police to carry out a thorough investigation. Justice will be served,” he assured.
This latest killing adds to growing concerns about student safety in Akungba-Akoko, where tensions are rising over what many see as a disturbing pattern of violence targeting university students.
