Osun State moves to regulate power sector independently

The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Electricity Bill 2025, a landmark legislation that empowers the state to regulate and manage its own electricity sector, REPUBLICAN NIGERIA reports.

The bill, which was initiated by the executive arm, was passed on Monday after its third reading during a plenary session chaired by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.

According to a statement issued by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, the bill paves the way for the establishment of the Osun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state.

House Majority Leader, Hon. Kofoworola Adewunmi, moved the motion for the bill’s third reading, following the presentation of a committee report by Hon. Taofiq Olayiwola, Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources and Energy.

Tiamiyu described the bill’s passage as a “significant move toward power decentralisation,” positioning Osun to take full charge of electricity-related matters within its jurisdiction.

In addition to the Electricity Bill, the Assembly also approved amendments to the laws establishing the Osun State Customary Courts of Appeal, Customary Courts, and District Customary Courts.

The amendments were deliberated upon and passed following motions supported by lawmakers including Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi, Hon. Sikiru Bajepade, and Hon. Folorunsho Ogundare.

All legislative items considered during the session received unanimous approval through a voice vote conducted by the Speaker.
