Osun speaker under fire as APC, PDP trade blame over clash with monarch

A heated political exchange has erupted in Osun State following a viral video showing the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, in a verbal confrontation with the traditional ruler of his hometown, Oba Isaac Oyewale, the Alasi of Asi.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the Speaker’s actions, describing the video as disturbing and calling for his arrest and investigation. In the footage, Egbedun appears to threaten and verbally abuse the 72-year-old monarch in what the APC claims is a clear case of political intimidation and abuse of power.
In a statement released by APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party said the Speaker’s conduct is a reflection of the “decaying leadership” under Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
“If the Speaker can subject a traditional ruler to such treatment, one can only imagine what members of the House experience behind closed doors,” Olabisi said.
“He has brought shame to the Osun State legislature and the Conference of Speakers nationwide. We urge the Inspector-General of Police to investigate and prosecute him to prevent further abuse of power.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) swiftly responded, accusing the APC of politicizing a sensitive issue for selfish gains. The party’s spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, described the APC’s reaction as both “hypocritical” and “irresponsible.”
According to the PDP, the confrontation was triggered by previous threats made against the Speaker’s life — threats that had already been reported to the police.
“This is not a case of aggression without cause. The Speaker acted under intense emotional pressure following repeated threats,” Bamiji stated.
“The matter is under investigation by law enforcement agencies, and it is reckless for the APC to jump to conclusions or incite public opinion against the Speaker.”
The PDP cautioned the opposition to avoid inflaming tensions and allow the authorities to handle the case professionally.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command has not issued an official comment on the ongoing controversy.
