Osun 2026: Why Christians should produce next governor – PFN
The Directorate of Politics and Governance (DPG), an arm of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Osun State chapter, has declared that for the sake of fairness and justice, the next governor of the state in 2026 should come from the Christian community.
In a statement signed by the State Director, Rev. Isaac Alamu, and the Secretary, Rev. Walter Aworanti, the group faulted reports suggesting that Muslims constitute 67 percent of the state’s population.
PFN said current statistics revealed Christians is at 47 percent, Muslims at 43 percent, while others make up 10 percent.
The resolution followed a one-day seminar in Osogbo attended by state executives of the DPG and representatives from the 30 local government areas of the state as well as Modakeke-Ife area office.
The PFN group argued that out of the seven civilian governors to have ruled Osun, only one, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, was a Christian. Others, including Senator Isiaka Adeleke, Chief Bisi Akande, Rauf Aregbesola, Gboyega Oyetola, and the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, are Muslims.
They stressed that by the time Governor Adeleke completes his tenure in 2026, Muslim governors would have governed the state for 22 years, compared to just seven years under Oyinlola.
The group also expressed displeasure with the Federal Government over the appointment of principal officers in the two new federal universities in the state.
“At the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akem Lasisi, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Monsur Adeleke, and Registrar, Mr. Kassim Kayode Babawale, are all Muslims,” the statement noted.
“Similarly, at the Federal University of Agriculture and Development, Iragbiji, all principal officers, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Atayese Muftau, Registrar, Mr. Afolabi Tunde Muritala, Bursar, Mr. Akem Adeniyi, and Librarian, Mr. Wasiu Olayide Lawal, are Muslims. These universities are not Islamic institutions but federally funded schools, and one expects President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa, to respect Nigeria’s secular nature when making such appointments,” the group added.
The PFN pledged support for all Christians willing to contest political offices regardless of party affiliation.
Speaking at the event, PFN State Chairman, Prophet Isaiah Adelowokan—represented by Bishop Adesola Olubadejo—along with resource persons, Barr. Segun Durotolu, a former Ila Local Government Chairman, and Bishop Seun Adeoye, a former NUJ chairman in the state, urged Christians to actively participate in politics.
They stressed that such involvement would help promote good governance and sanity in leadership.
