OAU student takes own life after repeating class twice
A tragic incident has struck the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as Ajibola Ibitayo, a second-year Dentistry student, has died by suicide after reportedly learning he would have to repeat his academic year for the second time.
University spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju confirmed that Mr. Ibitayo ended his life at home following the release of last semester’s examination results, which indicated he would repeat the class again.
In a condolence message, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire described the loss as deeply saddening and urged parents, guardians, and young people to view academic setbacks as temporary challenges, not the end of life.
He encouraged students to see failures as opportunities for redirection toward greater success.
The Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) called the event a devastating loss.
Its president, Adebayo Idris, urged members to support one another, prioritise mental well-being, and seek professional help when needed. “Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should feel alone in their struggles,” the association said in a statement, describing the late student as a promising young mind who faced silent battles.
IFUDSA extended heartfelt condolences to Mr. Ibitayo’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire university community.
