NUJ demands justice for slain Ibadan journalist, Ojo Peter
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has urged the state police command to intensify efforts in tracking down and prosecuting the killers of Ojo Peter, a former reporter with Parrot Extra and Daily Monitor, who was murdered in Ibadan last month.
The call was contained in a statement signed by the union’s acting chairman, Olusola Oladapo, and made available to REPUBLICAN NIGERIA on Tuesday night.
The union described Peter’s killing as a devastating loss, not only to the journalism profession but also to the entire state.
Peter was reportedly shot on August 18, 2025, during a daylight robbery along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of Ibadan around 2 p.m. Eyewitness accounts revealed that he was dispossessed of his cross bag during the attack.
Despite his plea to the assailants that the bag contained no money, he was shot in the back, leading to his untimely death.
The tragic incident has since sparked concern and fear among journalists and residents in Oyo State, many of whom are demanding answers and stronger assurances of security from law enforcement agencies.
Oladapo, in the NUJ’s statement, tasked the police with conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
He stressed that justice must be served, both to restore public confidence and to send a strong message against attacks on journalists and innocent citizens.
“The union is deeply saddened by the death of Ojo Peter,” the statement read. “We therefore call on the Oyo State police command to do everything within its power to unravel the case and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.”
The NUJ emphasized that the safety of journalists, who play a critical role in informing society, must be treated as a priority. It also urged security agencies to step up efforts in curbing rising incidents of violent crime across the state.
Peter’s death has become a rallying point for colleagues and rights advocates, with growing calls for justice and improved protection for members of the press.
