Nigerian students meet Dangote Group over recurring truck accidents

The leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) met with Dangote Group management in Lagos to address recurring truck accidents affecting students across the country.

The meeting, held at the Dangote Refinery Administrative Block, included Dangote Industries Vice President D.V.G. Edwin and other senior officials.

NAPS President Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan raised concerns about accidents that injured students and caused distress to families, calling for urgent action, compensation, and long-term safety measures.

NANS President Comrade Olushola L. Oladoja emphasized stricter operational standards, noting that many accidents could have been prevented with better enforcement of safety regulations.

In response, Dangote Group’s Director of Insurance, Obashola Alo, said the company was addressing some incidents, including airlifting a victim to a Lagos hospital, and pledged that all victims would be attended to.

He noted that some cases were only recently reported but assured students of management’s commitment.

VP Edwin reiterated Dangote Group’s commitment to safety, stating that all truck drivers were undergoing recertification and that surveillance systems were being introduced to monitor compliance.

He also clarified that some trucks with Dangote branding are operated by independent partners and urged the public to record vehicle details in case of accidents.

Both parties agreed to maintain ongoing engagement, with Dangote promising closer collaboration with students to ensure justice and improve safety, while NAPS and NANS pledged to monitor the implementation of measures until results are achieved.
