Nigerian mobile network operator, 9mobile changes name

9mobile office
Embattled Nigerian telecom operator, 9mobile, has rebranded to T2 as part of efforts to reposition the company amid ongoing financial and operational challenges.
Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe, announced the change during an event in Lagos on Friday, describing it as “a new era” for the firm.
“We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” he said.
The rebrand comes eight years after the company, formerly known as Etisalat, adopted the 9mobile name in 2017.
Despite the move, the telco continues to face steep competition and dwindling market share. As of June 2025, it had only 2.4 million subscribers, representing 1.42% of Nigeria’s 171.73 million active telecom users, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
For years, the operator has struggled with management instability and persistent service quality complaints, with no lasting solution in sight.
