Nigerian lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi has announced the launch of the Pelumi Olajengbesi Annual Essay and Debate Competition, a yearly national contest aimed at inspiring and rewarding outstanding students in Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by the lawyer on his official social media handles, the competition, which will begin with its 2025 National Edition, is open to Senior Secondary School students (SS1–SS3) across the country.
Prizes for the national category include ₦5 million for the first-place winner, ₦2 million for second place, and ₦1 million for third place, along with trophies, mentorship opportunities, certificates, and an all-expenses-paid educational excursion to Abuja. All other finalists will receive ₦100,000 each.
The contest will feature two stages — an essay submission phase through schools and a final debate among the top 20 shortlisted participants before a panel of judges. The theme will be announced later.
A special Ijesa North Honour Category has also been introduced for students from Oriade and Obokun Local Government Areas of Osun State.
This category will award ₦1 million, ₦500,000, and ₦200,000 to the top three winners respectively, with all finalists also receiving ₦100,000 each and other benefits.
Also, the Ijesa North edition will shortlist ten essays, five from each local government, before hosting its debate finale in Ijebu-Ijesa.
