Majority of Nigerian pastors struggle financially

The General Overseer of Sufficient Grace and Truth International Ministries (SGTIM), Bishop Seun Adeoye, has said that contrary to popular belief, most Nigerian pastors are facing financial hardship, with fewer than two per cent living in affluence.

Adeoye made the statement in Okinni, Osun State, during the unveiling of his ministry’s watchword for 2026.

He explained that the widespread assumption that pastors are wealthy because of tithes and offerings is misleading and unfair to the Church.

The cleric, who also serves as the Acting Nuncio of the World Bishops Council (WBC) in Africa and the International Communications Director of the Worldwide Anglican Church (WAC), noted that while a few pastors are indeed rich, their wealth does not necessarily come from church collections.

According to him, many prominent church leaders have distanced themselves from struggling ministers, choosing instead to publicly display their wealth while ignoring fellow pastors who are battling poverty and hunger.

Adeoye criticised situations where huge sums of money are donated to non-essential causes while thousands of pastors and their families lack basic necessities.

He urged wealthy clerics to show compassion and extend support to less privileged ministers, describing such acts as a reflection of Christ’s character.

He referenced the biblical story of the Good Samaritan, challenging affluent pastors to reflect on how many fellow ministers they have helped outside their own churches.

The bishop warned that divisions within the Church, where the rich only associate with the rich, would not last, adding that significant changes would occur in the religious space.

He advised influential church leaders to put their affairs in order.

Adeoye announced that his ministry’s watchword for 2026 is “Forward Movement,” calling on Nigerians to prepare for a new year of progress and abundant blessings, while stressing the need for unity and mutual support within the Christian community.
