LAUTECH medical school lecturers embark on indefinite strike

Academic activities at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Medical School, Ogbomoso, have been brought to a halt as members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), LAUTECH Chapter, commenced an indefinite strike.
The strike, which officially began on Friday, was announced in a letter addressed to the university’s Vice Chancellor and signed by the association’s acting chairman, Professor M.A. Olamoyegun, and acting secretary, Dr. A.O. Alabi.
NAMDA is demanding the immediate implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the payment of salary arrears owed since January 2025. The union accused the university management of consistently ignoring several communications, a 14-day ultimatum, and repeated appeals over the unresolved issues.
The tipping point, according to the association, was the payment of July salaries without incorporating the CONMESS adjustment. The union interpreted this as a sign of the administration’s unwillingness to resolve the matter amicably.
“All academic engagements—including lectures, ward rounds, tutorials, examinations, student supervision, and committee participation—across the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences are hereby suspended,” the letter stated.
NAMDA clarified that the strike is strictly against the university’s management and does not affect the operations of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The lecturers, many of whom are also practicing medical doctors, noted that their demands pertain solely to their academic duties and entitlements under the university system.
The association lamented that despite maintaining patience and institutional loyalty over the past year, they have been met with “continued neglect and lack of satisfactory responsiveness” from the university authorities.
As a result, NAMDA said it has been left with no choice but to fully withdraw from all academic services at the medical school until their demands are met.
