The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the killing of one of its students during an unauthorised sign-out ceremony in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The victim, identified as Mr. Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student, was shot on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market.

In a statement, Registrar Olayinka Balogun said the university had banned sign-out activities on campus since 2023 and had instructed local hotels not to host such events. However, preliminary findings revealed that some students held the ceremony on the football pitch within the market despite the prohibition.

The incident turned fatal when Babalola was shot. Witnesses reported that he tried to escape on a motorbike but fell and was later found unresponsive. Police officers, alerted by the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, recovered a bag from his body, which helped confirm his identity. His remains were taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

Balogun said the university is cooperating fully with the police investigation and has notified the victim’s family.

The management extended condolences to his relatives, friends, and colleagues, praying for his soul to rest in peace.
