Lagos Government orders psychiatric evaluation for one-way drivers

The Lagos State Government has directed that 18 motorists recently apprehended for driving against traffic undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluations as part of their legal prosecution.
The directive, announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), is part of an intensified enforcement strategy aimed at curbing dangerous driving behaviours and promoting discipline on Lagos roads.
According to LASTMA, the drivers were arrested for “reckless and deliberate violations” of traffic laws, commonly known as one-way driving. In addition to facing prosecution, they will be subjected to mental health assessments to evaluate their psychological fitness to drive.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that the psychiatric evaluations are aligned with global best practices in traffic safety and are not intended as punishment or stigmatization.
“This measure is a protective intervention designed to shield the motoring public from individuals who display blatant disregard for road safety and legal norms,” Bakare-Oki stated.
Despite continuous public education efforts, one-way driving remains widespread across Lagos, often leading to accidents, traffic gridlocks, and infrastructure damage.
Bakare-Oki noted that the policy is both preventive and corrective, aimed at reforming errant drivers while deterring potential violators.
“This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding lives, promoting responsible road use, and restoring order on our roads,” he added.
