Kumuyi warns against pressure over succession in Deeper Life Bible Church

General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has cautioned members against agitating for his successor, insisting that the decision lies solely with God.

Speaking during a Bible study programme — later circulated online — the 83-year-old church leader dismissed any attempt to push him out of office, stressing that “no one has the authority” to do so.

Kumuyi expressed displeasure over comments made by an unnamed young preacher, who, during a recent teaching, repeatedly stated that “there is no leadership without a successor.” The cleric described the remark as unnecessary, especially while he remains active in ministry.

“The brother who taught the other Tuesday kept saying there is no leadership without a successor. He said it twice. I felt that was too much, more so since your father is still here. God will give a successor at His own time,” he said.

Citing biblical examples, Kumuyi emphasised that leadership appointments are divine matters, not subject to pressure from church members. He warned against any form of interference, noting that even his family cannot dictate his exit.

“You are not going to fight your shepherd, your pilot. I reject any member of the church… who tries to control me. I won’t even take that from my wife because I am the head of the home… I stand where I stand and nobody will put me under pressure,” he declared.

While acknowledging that leadership transition is inevitable, Kumuyi maintained it would only occur at God’s appointed time.

He noted that he has given many gifted ministers opportunities to preach but stressed that the choice of his successor remains “in God’s hands.”

“If God gives you a pastor that is still very active at this age… and you are asking for a successor, it makes me think you are tired of seeing me around,” he said. “When the time comes, God will choose a man after His own heart. Don’t try to drive me away, even though I know you cannot.”
