Embroiled in a deepening tussle over the Kano Emirate throne, the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has come out in defence of his supporters following a violent clash on Sunday at the Kofar Kudu Palace, the residence of the reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The confrontation reportedly occurred as Emir Bayero’s convoy passed near the palace on his return from a condolence visit to the home of the late business mogul, Dantata. Supporters of both emirs allegedly engaged in a scuffle, fueling ongoing tensions since Sanusi II’s reinstatement by the Kano State Government.

Speaking on behalf of Emir Bayero, media aide Khalid Uba said the emir’s supporters acted in self-defence after being ambushed by youths wielding stones and weapons.

“On our way back, some youths suddenly launched an attack at Kofar Kudu, throwing stones and carrying dangerous objects,” Uba stated. “Our supporters did not initiate the violence and had no weapons. They simply defended themselves and ensured the Emir’s safe passage.”

He noted that Emir Bayero had routinely taken the same route without incident in the past, insisting the attack was unprovoked and politically motivated.

The incident underscores the lingering tensions following the Kano State Government’s controversial decision to abolish the emirates created under the previous administration and reinstall Sanusi II as the sole Emir of Kano. The move has reignited loyalty divisions and intensified the political and traditional power struggle in the state.
