JUST IN: Tinubu confers posthumous national honours on 4 Ogoni leaders executed by Abacha
President Bola Tinubu has posthumously conferred national honours on four prominent Ogoni leaders in recognition of their sacrifice and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
The honourees are Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Albert Badey, Chief Samuel Orage, and Chief Theophilus Orage, each awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
The late Ogoni leaders were part of the vanguard that resisted oppression in the Niger Delta during the 1990s. They were executed in 1995 alongside renowned activist Ken Saro-Wiwa by the military regime of General Sani Abacha—a move that sparked global outrage and subjected Nigeria to international sanctions.
By conferring the honours, the Tinubu administration said it seeks to not only acknowledge their sacrifice but also to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to justice, reconciliation, and national healing.
