JUST IN: Popular Nigerian lawmaker dies on New Year’s Eve
Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial Zone, has died at the age of 52.
A family source said he passed away on Wednesday in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a serious illness.
Akwashiki was born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah village, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
He began his political career in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (2011–2019), serving as Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker.
In 2019, he was elected Senator for Nasarawa North under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was re-elected in 2023 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
At the National Assembly, he chaired the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs and later the Committee on Air Force.
He is survived by his wife and children.
