JUST IN: One rescued as three-storey building collapses in Abuja

A three-storey building collapsed on Saturday evening in Abuja’s Lifecamp area, trapping at least one person under the rubble and prompting an overnight rescue operation.

The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 6:00 PM. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, launching a coordinated effort to rescue those trapped.

A 27-year-old man, identified as Aliyu Salisu from the Niger Republic, was rescued at approximately 4:00 AM on Sunday after spending nearly 10 hours beneath the debris. He was taken to Cedar Crest Hospital in Gudu and is currently receiving treatment.

Following the collapse, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Lifecamp Division led a team that immediately secured the area and facilitated rescue efforts. The operation involved multiple agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Development Control officials, and engineering firms Julius Berger and Zeberced.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, personally visited the site and supervised the rescue operation. He commended the swift response of emergency personnel and the cooperation of local residents who assisted in the efforts.

Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the collapse, and investigations are expected to commence immediately.
