JUST IN: Nigerian nurses finally suspend strike

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide warning strike following the Federal Government’s commitment to meet the union’s longstanding demands, republican.com.ng reports.
In a circular issued after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held virtually on Saturday, the union said it reviewed the outcome of a negotiation with top government officials on August 1.
The meeting led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining a clear timeline for the implementation of nine key demands.
The negotiations had the presence of the Ministers of Health, Labour and Employment, among other stakeholders. According to the NEC, the strike was suspended in the spirit of dialogue and in response to the government’s time-bound action plan.
“The NEC acknowledges the positive steps taken by the Federal Government in responding to our demands,” the statement read.
Signed by NANNM President Comrade Haruna Mamman and General Secretary Dr. A. Shettima, the circular directed all state councils to mobilise members for immediate return to work.
The national leadership will monitor the government’s compliance with the MoU.
The union also warned against any form of victimisation of members who participated in the strike and reaffirmed that all actions were within the rights of organised labour.
The seven-day strike, which commenced on July 29, had disrupted healthcare services across public hospitals nationwide. NANNM thanked its members for their unity and dedication during the industrial action.
