Dr. Doyin Abiola, renowned journalist and former Managing Director of National Concord, has passed away at the age of 82. She died around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday after a long illness, according to her family.
A pioneer in Nigerian media, Dr. Abiola made history as the first woman to serve as editor and later managing director/editor-in-chief of a national newspaper. Her career spanned more than three decades, during which she played a significant role in shaping public discourse and mentoring future journalists.
Born in 1943, she earned a degree in English and Drama from the University of Ibadan in 1969. She began her journalism career at the Daily Sketch, where she wrote a popular column, Tiro, focusing on public issues and gender equity.
In 1970, she traveled to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism. After returning to Nigeria, she joined Daily Times as a features writer and rose to become Group Features Editor. She later earned a Ph.D. in Communications and Political Science from New York University in 1979.
Upon her return, Dr. Abiola joined the Daily Times editorial board, working alongside notable figures like Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan. In 1980, she became the pioneer editor of the newly launched National Concord, and by 1986, she was appointed Managing Director.
She married Chief MKO Abiola in 1981 and stood firmly by his side during his political struggles, especially after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Beyond the newsroom, Dr. Abiola made significant contributions to media development in Nigeria. She chaired the nomination panel of the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) and served on the advisory council of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ogun State University.
Her work earned her several prestigious accolades, including the Eisenhower Fellowship in 1986 and the DAME Lifetime Achievement Award — making her only the second woman to receive the honor after Mrs. Omobola Onajide.
