Joseph Yobo returns to school, pursues certification in sports management

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has enrolled at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Lagos, to obtain formal certification in sports management and administration.

Yobo made this known on Monday when the Director General of NIS, Philip Shaibu, led members of the institute’s advisory committee on an inspection tour of the school’s facilities. The team visited various sections, including the hostels, library, gyms, offices, and lecture halls.

Addressing the delegation in his classroom, where he is currently studying Sports Management, Yobo explained that his decision to return to school was driven by a desire to broaden his knowledge and professional credentials in sports administration.

“From my background as a former player and coach, I want to gain the necessary experience and certification in sports management. As a sports person, there is no knowledge too small. I’m here to expand my mindset,” Yobo said.

Several of Yobo’s classmates also spoke on their goals for attending NIS.

Abiodun Ajayi said he hoped to drive grassroots participation in volleyball, particularly at the secondary school level, while Akpan Charity from the Cross River State Sports Commission noted that she was pursuing certification to complement her existing knowledge of kickboxing and strengthen her role as a sports manager.

“I want to be a certified sports manager, not just carry the title at work,” Charity stated.

Another student, Ariyo Olayiwola, added: “Although I had some exposure to sports management, I came to NIS to truly understand its intricacies.”

Responding to concerns about practical experience, Director General Shaibu assured students that the institute would intensify efforts to incorporate hands-on internship opportunities into its curriculum, ensuring a more comprehensive learning experience.
