Jordan Henderson signs two-year deal with Brentford after Ajax exit

England international Jordan Henderson has joined Brentford on a free transfer, the Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday. The 35-year-old midfielder signed a two-year contract following his departure from Dutch side Ajax.

Henderson returns to English football after leaving Liverpool in 2023. He briefly played in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax, where he made 57 appearances and captained the side. His contract with the Dutch club was terminated last week with a year still remaining, following a disappointing end to their Eredivisie title bid.

Brentford’s new manager, Keith Andrews, moved quickly to secure Henderson’s signature after the departure of Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal. Andrews described the veteran as an ideal fit for the team’s evolving structure.

“When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision,” Andrews said. “He’s still extremely fit and highly motivated. His experience, professionalism, and leadership qualities are exactly what we need.”

Andrews noted that the club had lost several experienced figures, including Norgaard, Mark Flekken, and Ben Mee, and highlighted Henderson’s influence during his time at Liverpool. “He has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League history, helping drive Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League titles,” he added.

Henderson, who has earned 84 caps for England, was recently recalled to the national team setup by head coach Thomas Tuchel. His time in Saudi Arabia was marred by criticism, particularly over his decision to join Al-Ettifaq despite previous public support for LGBTQ rights. His stint in the Gulf nation ended after just six months.

Now back in the Premier League, Henderson brings a wealth of experience to Brentford as they prepare for the 2025/26 season under new management.
