Jake Paul undergoes surgery after Miami bout

Former two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua delivered a punishing display against Jake Paul, leaving the American with a broken jaw during their heavyweight bout in Miami.

The fight exposed the clear gap in power and experience between Joshua and the YouTuber-turned-boxer, as the Briton’s sustained pressure proved overwhelming.

According to the BBC, Paul underwent surgery after the bout, with doctors fitting two titanium plates to stabilise fractures in his jaw. Several teeth were also removed as a result of the damage sustained. Paul later confirmed the operation was successful, sharing an X-ray on social media that showed two fractures along his jawline.

The 28-year-old was stopped in the sixth round after failing to beat the referee’s count, having been knocked down multiple times as Joshua asserted control in the later rounds. Paul admitted immediately after the fight that his jaw was “definitely” broken.

“Surgery went well, thanks for all the love and support,” Paul wrote on Instagram. “Liquids only for seven days.”
Joshua’s heavy right hands were key to the stoppage, with Paul dropped twice across the fifth and sixth rounds.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Paul attempted to strike a light-hearted tone, joking that he could still face Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez “in 10 days”.

The bout had attracted criticism before fight night due to the weight difference and experience gap between the fighters. Paul, who built most of his boxing career at cruiserweight, relied on speed and movement but was ultimately unable to withstand Joshua’s power.

Following the defeat, Paul said he would reassess his boxing future and focus on fighting opponents in his natural weight class.

“We’ll heal the broken jaw and come back to fight people my weight. I’m going for the cruiserweight world title,” he said, adding that he plans to take a short break from the sport after six demanding years.

Paul had been poised to enter the World Boxing Association cruiserweight rankings before the fight but slipped one place following the loss. A return to the division is expected once he is medically cleared, likely in 2026.
For now, the focus remains on recovery after a decisive and punishing lesson delivered by a resurgent Anthony Joshua.
