Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter (now X), has launched BitChat, a new internet-free messaging platform aimed at challenging Elon Musk’s X.

Dorsey unveiled the app—currently in its developmental phase—in a recent post on X, describing it as a personal side project focused on Bluetooth mesh networking, encrypted messaging, and decentralized communication.

“My weekend project is to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things,” Dorsey shared.

BitChat relies on a store-and-forward system, meaning messages are passed from one Bluetooth-enabled device to another until they reach the final recipient, removing the need for traditional internet or cellular connections.

Dorsey stepped down as CEO of Twitter in November 2021, while Elon Musk completed a $44 billion acquisition of the platform—renaming it X—in October 2022.
