INEC to resume nationwide continuous voter registration ahead of 2027 polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to resume the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the country as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue State, Professor Samuel Egwu, disclosed this during a press briefing on Monday in Makurdi. He revealed that the exercise will begin on August 18, 2025, and will cover all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to Professor Egwu, the resumption of the CVR is in line with the constitutional provision that mandates continuous registration to ensure an inclusive voter register, particularly for individuals who have turned 18 since the last general election.
The registration will commence online via the INEC portal (http://cvr.inecnigeria.org) on August 18, while in-person registration at INEC area offices and designated centres nationwide is scheduled to start on August 25, 2025. The physical registration will take place from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Egwu said the CVR will accommodate new registrants, especially those who recently turned 18, individuals who missed previous registrations due to absence from the country, incarceration, or disinterest, and those seeking to update or correct their information.
The exercise will also cater to requests for replacement of lost, damaged, or stolen Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), changes in personal details, and transfers between wards, polling units, or states.
Emphasising that the CVR is free of charge, Egwu urged the public to report any INEC official demanding payment for the service. He added that, initially, registration would be conducted at INEC’s area offices across the local government areas, with additional centres to be announced later.
Describing the CVR as critical to the success of the electoral process, Egwu encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the early registration window and avoid the last-minute rush and inconvenience experienced in previous exercises.
