INEC declares LP candidate serving jail term winner of assembly rerun election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bright Ngene, a prison inmate and candidate of the Labour Party (LP), winner of the rerun election for Enugu South 1 State Constituency held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Ngene, a legal practitioner currently serving his jail term at the Enugu Correctional Facility, emerged victorious after the rerun, which had earlier been marred by disruptions and clashes among party supporters.

In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, the commission confirmed that the elections in Enugu and Kano — both previously disrupted by violence and thuggery — had been concluded, with winners duly returned.
