I miss my wife, says Obasanjo at 20th memorial service for late first Lady, Stella

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to his late wife, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, describing her as a woman of deep service and compassion. Speaking at the 20th memorial thanksgiving service held at the Chapel of Christ the King of Glory, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the former president emotionally declared, “I miss my wife.”

Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, who died on October 23, 2005, served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 1999 to 2005. Obasanjo said the thanksgiving was to celebrate “a life of service” that left a lasting mark on the nation and those around her.

Her son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, also paid tribute, describing his late mother as caring, protective, and uncompromising in discipline. He said her laughter, kindness, and wisdom continue to guide him.

“Her legacy will live on,” he added.

The service featured a sermon by Prof. Yusuf Obaje, pioneer chaplain of the Aso Villa Chapel, who described Stella as one of those “immortalised by their impact on humanity.”

Speaking on the theme “On Duty for God and Nigeria’s Greatness,” Obaje said every life on earth is a divine assignment, and Mrs. Obasanjo fulfilled hers with grace and purpose.

Former Ogun State Governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun were among dignitaries present. Both described the late First Lady as loving and selfless.
Daniel recalled naming a motherless home after her, while Amosun said she “elevated the office of the First Lady” and carried herself with dignity.

Her younger brother, John Abebe, remembered her as a peacemaker and source of joy in the family.

“Sister Stella had a unique way of doing things… She always brought smiles and comfort, even in moments of grief,” he said.

The memorial service marked two decades since her passing, celebrating her enduring legacy of compassion, service, and devotion to family and nation.
