How I will help Sunday Igboho – Ooni of Ife
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has pledged to intervene in the ongoing standoff between Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, and the Nigerian government.
Oba Ogunwusi assured that he would prevail on the authorities to remove Igboho’s name from the wanted list, following appeals made by the activist.
Igboho was declared wanted in July 2021 after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his Ibadan residence and claimed to have recovered a stockpile of arms.
Since then, he has been at the center of legal and political battles with the federal government.
Speaking at his palace in Ile-Ife over the weekend, the monarch said he had forgiven Igboho for past criticisms directed at him and emphasized his role as a father to all Yorubas. He expressed gratitude that Igboho survived his ordeal.
“I am not angry with you because I am the father of all. You are a brave man and our pride in Yorubaland, and you will not die young. We are going to ensure that your name is removed from the wanted list. Ile-Ife is the source of the universe, and no one desires peace and development in Yorubaland more than I do,” the Ooni stated.
The assurance from the monarch is expected to ease tensions surrounding Igboho’s status and potentially pave the way for reconciliation between the activist and the Nigerian government.
