Tragedy struck in the Idumoza community of Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, as a hotel building under construction collapsed, k!lling its owner, Andrew Isesere.
The incident occurred last Friday, but the remains of the deceased were only recovered from the rubble on Sunday morning.
Eyewitnesses said Isesere was trapped under the debris, while more than 20 workers at the site narrowly escaped death.
Residents revealed that concerns had earlier been raised about the quality of materials used for the building. “He was told he was using low-quality material—12mm instead of 16mm rods for the pillars. There was no base basket at the pillars,” a neighbour, Andrew Inegbebor, told journalists. “There was no engineer on site.
He supervised the construction himself. Now look at the result.”
The collapse has sparked outrage in the community, with many blaming the tragedy on the use of substandard materials and the lack of professional oversight.
When contacted, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said he was yet to receive a briefing from the Divisional Police Officer in Uromi regarding the incident.
