…NDLEA recovers 3,476kg of cannabis strains, 645,906 pills of opioids in nationwide raids
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested the General Overseer of The Turn of Mercy Church, Prophet Adefolusho Aanu Olasele, over allegations of trafficking large quantities of illicit drugs into Nigeria.
Olasele, also known as Abbas Ajakaiye, was arrested on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at his church in Lekki, Lagos, shortly after a service.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said the suspect had been wanted since June after 200kg of Ghana Loud cannabis was seized at Okun Ajah beach on June 4, and another 700kg recovered from his delivery van on July 6.
He allegedly moved the drugs from Ghana to Nigeria by sea and fled to Ghana to avoid arrest.
In Lagos, NDLEA officers on August 7 arrested Benjamin Udo Ukoh at Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, with 15.63kg of Canadian Loud cannabis.
In Nasarawa State, 3,093kg of skunk was seized on August 9 from Emmanuel Asoquo Johnny, Okem Raphael, and Chekwube Odo in New Karu.
In Kano State, between August 6 and 8, operatives recovered 368kg of cannabis, 20,000 tramadol pills, and 200 diazepam ampoules from three suspects in different locations.
In Gombe State, a raid on an uncompleted building on August 8 yielded 550,266 opioid pills, and 50,000 more tramadol capsules were seized from another suspect on August 9.
In Edo State, NDLEA officers on August 6 intercepted a bus at Ewu Junction, recovering 23,940 tramadol capsules, other drugs, and injections, and arresting one suspect.
The NDLEA also carried out public sensitization campaigns across the country under its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) program, visiting schools, religious centers, workplaces, military bases, and correctional facilities.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the Lagos, Nasarawa, Kano, Gombe, and Edo commands for their efforts and called for sustained operations.
